The fake internet meme known as the Momo Challenge is being turned into feature film by Orion Pictures, bringing what was previously just a terrifying rumor into the real world.
For the uninitiated, the meme was thought to encourage WhatsApp users to call a special number which would then curse them to carry out the deeds of the demon, pictured by the face of a deformed woman.
It turned out that the face was simply a sculpture from a Japanese special effects company, and the meme was a hoax. Nevertheless, the idea caught on and, thanks in part to the power of virality and the terrifying image, many people couldn’t get the idea out of their minds that this might be real. It wasn’t, but that’s not stopping Hollywood from taking us there.
According to Deadline, the film will be produced by Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment and producer Taka Ichise, the team that developed the international versions of The Grudge and The Ring.
