Update: In the wake of real life mass shootings in the news, Universal Pictures has decided to pull the film and will not release it for now.
Statement from Universal spokesperson:
“While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film.”
The statement was obtained by the LA Times.
The folks at Blumhouse, the production studio behind The Purge and Get Out, are back at it again with a new horror thriller called The Hunt. According to the synopsis, the plot revolves around an Internet rumor and driven by a group of rich elites to trap a group of people in a remote location in order to hunt them.
The idea is pretty fun (if you like dark fare), but not necessarily original if you remember Surviving the Game, which starred Ice-T, Rutger Hauer, Charles S. Dutton, and F. Murray Abraham. Of course, the twist here in this more modern take is the involvement of technology.
The Hunt hits theaters on September 27.
