It finally happened. Hollywood has run out of ideas. At least that’s what you might think in the wake of today’s news from Variety that one of the Wachoski directors is bringing the franchise back.
The Matrix 4 will star Keanu Reeves (as Neo) and Carrie Anne Moss (as Trinity) returning to reprise their roles in the iconic film series.
No word yet if Laurence Fishburne will be returning to assume his role as Morpheus. (The writers and editors at Variety clearly aren’t Matrix fans, as the site called the character “Morbius.”) *Update: The error has since been corrected.
The film will be directed by Lana Wachowski. If you’re looking for some guidance on what current Wachowski film work looks like, you can check out Sense8, a science fiction series on Netflix that was praised for exploring interesting ideas, but was canceled after two seasons because it drew such a small audience.
The original film is currently enjoying its 20th anniversary, which Warner Bros. is commemorating by letting the public watch the film in theaters again starting on Aug. 30.
